Part 2: How ZEISS software supports doctors

In Part 1 of our special issue about digitization we presented two software sites of ZEISS Medical Technology. Our colleagues in Munich, the Indian city of Bangalore, Jena and Dublin, California develop and test software used in ZEISS medical systems. We will present a few examples here.

Software supports doctors during operations that could make all the difference between life and death for their patients. This is shown by the story of Tabitha Williams.

In the minimally invasive correction of defective vision the laser is controlled by  software, as our colleague Li Ning from China reports. ZEISS software is used in eye doctors‘ practices and hospitals when the devices need to be networked with each  other, and software also supports dentists in their training and talks with patients.

"10.000 successful cases – and I was one of them"

A personal success story of a refractive treatment

Around 4.2 billion people around the globe and around 30 percent of the Chinese population have defective vision, with the incidence of myopia being particularly high in China. As alternatives to eyeglasses and contact lenses, surgical techniques have been developed to remedy this problem. The most common include refractive laser methods.

The laser from ZEISS that makes this possible is called VisuMax. Using software, it enables the refractive correction to be performed using a keyhole technique.

In view of the major technical progress that has now been achieved, it is no wonder that also many ZEISS employees have already had this procedure done on their own eyes – our colleague Li Ning from China, who reports on his experience here, is a prime example. He was the 10,000th patient of Professor Zhou Xingtao from Shanghai Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University to have received the SMILE treatment.
